For his leadership and valor, Airman First Class Lewis was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

Airman First Class Lewis was the tail gunner of a B-26B Invader bomber with the 730th Bomber Squadron, 452nd Bomber Wing. On March 22, 1952, while on an armed reconnaissance near Kangdong, contact was lost with the aircraft. He was listed as Missing in Action and was presumed dead on February 28, 1954.
