Lieutenant Lewis, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Fighter Squadron 21, Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS RANGER (CVA-61). On February 27, 1971, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4J). After takeoff on a night mission his aircraft experienced engine failure and he ejected, but could not be recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
