Commander Leaver was a the operations officer of Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla 11, U.S. Navy. On May 8, 1972, he was a passenger in a Lockheed Viking Anti-Submarine Helicopter (SH-3G) making a landing on the fantail of the cruiser USS PROVIDENCE (CLG-6) when it crashed and fell overboard. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
