Chief Hospital Corpsman Laporte was assigned to the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division at Danang, South Vietnam. On September 5, 1967, he was a member of a nine man patrol, parachuting out of an aircraft into Happy Valley, Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. He was swept away from the others by heavy wind and was reported as missing. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
