Major Kott was a member of the Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 242, Marine Air Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On October 31, 1967, he was the bombardier/navigator flying in a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a night electronics support mission over North Vietnam. Contact was lost when the aircraft was about 15 miles east of Hanoi. His remains were recovered on July 17, 1984 and identified on August 2, 1984. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
