Commander Knabb was a member of Attack Squadron 106, Carrier Air Wing 10 aboard the aircraft carrier USS INTREPID (CVS-11). On October 21, 1968, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) on a strafing missing into North Vietnam. When on his strafing run his aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile, crashed and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
