Staff Sergeant Kier was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On May 6, 1970, he was defending an artillery fire support base near Henderson Hill in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, when the Viet Cong overran the position. His remains were recovered on June 13, 1996 and identified on February 28, 2002. His name permanently is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
