Father (Captain) Kapaun was a veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was the Chaplain for the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War by the North Koreans near Unsan, North Korea on November 2, 1950. He died at Pyoktong Camp #5 on May 23, 1951 after being denied medical treatment by his captors. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
