Lieutenant Colonel Johnson was a member of 325th Bomber Squadron stationed on Guam. On December 21, 1972, he was a crew member of a Boeing Stratofortress Bomber (B-52G) on a bombing mission over North Vietnam. The bomber was hit by a surface to air missile. His remains were recovered on December 15, 1988 and identified on May 23, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
