Lieutenant Colonel Johnson was the co-pilot of the 441st Bomber Squadron, 72nd Strategic Wing, Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. On December 28, 1972, he was the navigator of a Boeing Stratofortress Bomber (B-52D) on a bombing mission between Hanoi and Haiphong, North Vietnam. The bomber received a surface to air Missile hit and crashed. His remains were recovered on December 4, 1985 and identified on June 10, 1986. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
