Captain Hurst was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 115, Marine Air Group 13, 1st Marine Air Wing. On July 13, 1968, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) over Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
