For his leadership and valor, Sergeant First Class Hunnicutt was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Sergeant First Class Hunnicutt was a member of Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded in South Korea on October 6, 1950 and returned to duty a week later. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in North Korea on December 12, 1950 and died while a prisoner on December 31, 1950. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
