Commander Holmes was a member of Attack Squadron 165, Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CONSTELLATION (CVA-64). On December 30, 1971, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile. He parachuted to the sea, but his remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
