Commander Hoff was a member of Attack Squadron 86, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On January 7, 1970, he was the pilot of a Vought Attack Aircraft Corsair II (A-7A) on a combat mission near Sepone, Laos when his aircraft caught fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
