Staff Sergeant Hewitt was a rifleman with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On March 23, 1966, he was declared missing while moving to his listening post in South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on June 24, 2010 and identified on September 20, 2010. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
