Captain Hetrick was a member of the 1st Air Commando Squadron, Pleiku Air Base, South Vietnam. On February 24, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Skyraider Attack Aircraft (A1-E) on a bombing mission about five miles south of Sepone, Savannakhet Province, Laos when his aircraft was struck by hostile fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on July 10, 2001 and identified on March 26, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
