Commander Hessom was a member of Attack Squadron 215, Carrier Air Wing 21 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS HANCOCK (CVA-19). On March 5, 1966, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H) over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were recovered on June 7, 1994 and identified on October 17, 1994. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
