Staff Sergeant Heitman was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On March 13, 1968, he was a passenger in a Bell Iroquois Utility Helicopter (UH-1H) flying from Phu Bai to Camp Evans, South Vietnam. About 4 miles from Camp Evans the aircraft was hit by enemy fire and forced to land. All ten persons left the aircraft, but Staff Sergeant Heitman was later listed as missing. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
