Captain Hauer was a member of the 21st Tactical Air Support Squadron. On September 5, 1970, he was the pilot of a Cessna Skymaster Observation Aircraft (O-2A) on a mission 25 miles west of Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa Province, South Vietnam, when he was shot down. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
