Staff Sergeant Hammond was a member of the Combat Air Group III, Marine Air Force. He was taken prisoner and died in captivity at Camp ST18, Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam on February 8, 1968. His remains were recovered on January 24, 1989 and identified on April 3, 2004. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
