Lieutenant Haifley was a member of Reconnaissance Heavy Attack Squadron 13, Carrier Air Wing 14 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65). On December 28, 1972, he was co-pilot a North American Vigilante Fighter (RA-5C) over North Vietnam when the aircraft exploded. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 7, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
