Lieutenant Commander Gray was a member of Attack Squadron 25, Carrier Air Wing 2 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS MIDWAY (CVA-41). On August 7, 1965, he was flying in a Douglas Attack Skyraider (A-1H)during operations over North Vietnam. LCDR Gray participated in successive attacks on a military installation in the city of Dong Hoi, when heavy and accurate antiaircraft fire cost him his life. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
