In 1943, Flight Officer Gossett was the pilot of a single seat A-36A type aircraft which was lost during bad weather in the mountains of Italy while searching for targets of opportunity during a strafing mission. The crash site was located in 2012 and remains were recovered in 2014. In 2016, the remains were identified as those of FLT O Gossett. His name is permanently inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Cambridge, England.
