Staff Sergeant Gatewood was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. On May 31, 1968, he was declared missing while fighting the enemy near Quang Tri, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
