Captain Garrett was a member of Troop A, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On October 22, 1971, he was the pilot of a Bell Cobra Attack Helicopter (AH-1G) on an armed visual reconnaissance over Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. As he was checking weather conditions in a valley, he became lost, crashed into the mountain and exploded. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
