Lieutenant Commander Fortner, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 155, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On October 17, 1967, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4E) on an attack mission. After firing his rockets at a target, he lost control of the aircraft and it crashed. His remains were recovered on November 3, 1988 and identified on March 14, 1989. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
