Commander Ford was a member of Attack Squadron 86, Carrier Air Wing 6 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CVA-66). On June 11, 1968, he was flying in a Vought Attack Aircraft Corsair II (A-7A) over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. He was injured and taken prisoner. He died while incarcerated. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on November 4, 1985. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
