Major Fleming was a member of the Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265, Marine Air Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On May 10, 1968, he was a crew member of a Boeing Sea Knight Cargo Helicopter (CH-46A) that was grounded at the Kham Duc special forces camp in western Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. As a rescue helicopter was leaving he grabbed its skids and fell as the helicopter reached 100 feet. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
