Staff Sergeant Fischer was a member of Company M, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. On January 8, 1968, he was with an ambush team in Dien Ban District, south of Da Nang, South Vietnam when he was declared missing while fighting the enemy in South Vietnam. His remains were recovered on October 7, 1994 and identified on September 4, 2007. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
