Captain Finch was a member of the 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment. On March 30, 1972, he was a passenger in a Hughes Loach Observation Helicopter (OH-6A) about 12 miles west-southwest of Kontum, South Vietnam, when the aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed. Captain Finch was dazed and walked towards the enemy. His remains were recovered on August 14, 1985 and identified on October 24, 1985. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
