Staff Sergeant Ellis was a medic with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. On April 18, 1969, he was a member of a tank infantry team on a combat mission in South Vietnam. When a tank was hit by a rocket propelled grenade and wounded a man, Staff Sergeant Ellis went to his aid and was wounded. He was considered as killed in action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
