Major Egan was a member of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On January 21, 1966, he was declared missing when his unit came under fire about 15 miles southwest of Quang Ngai, South Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
