Commander Earnest was a pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS SARATOGA (CV-60). On November 28, 1972, he was flying over North Vietnam when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
