Captain Donnelly was a member of Attack Squadron 35, Carrier Air Wing 8 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS AMERICA (CVA-66). On September 17, 1972, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a combat mission over Hai Duong, North Vietnam when his plane crashed about 8 miles west of the city. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on January 31, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
