Commander Dodge was a member of Fighter Squadron 51, Carrier Air Wing 5 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS HANCOCK (CVA-19). On May 17, 1967, he was the pilot of a Vought Crusader Fighter (F-8E) on a combat mission over North Vietnam. When he was about 20 miles northwest of Vinh, Nghe Province he was shot down and taken prisoner. He died in captivity. His remains were recovered on July 7, 1981 and identified on July 20, 1981. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
