For his leadership and great valor, Lieutenant Colonel Davis was awarded the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Flying Cross with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Silver Star with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

USMA Class of 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Davis was the pilot of a F-86 Sabre Jet fighter bomber with the 334th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, 4th Fighter-Interceptor Group. On February 10, 1952, he was leading a flight of three F-86s near the Sinuiju-Yalu, North Korea. He saw a flight of 12 MiG-15s racing to intercept the U.S. fighter bombers. He positioned his two comrades and attacked the enemy flight singlehandedly. He destroyed three MiG-15s before he was shot down. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
