Warrant Officer, First Class Crandall was a member of Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On February 18, 1971, he was the pilot of a Hughes Cayuse Observation Helicopter making an aerial reconnaissance over Laos. The aircraft was shot down 8 miles east of Tchpone, Laos. His remains were recovered on February 19, 1991 and identified on June 9, 1993. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
