Lieutenant Cooper was a member of Attack Squadron 22, Carrier Air Wing 15 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On February 4, 1972, he was flying in a Vought Attack Aircraft Attack Corsair II (A-7E) over South Vietnam when he was Killed in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
