Commander Coons was a member of Attack Squadron 35, Carrier Air Wing 9 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65). On February 28, 1968, he was flying in a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over North Vietnam when his aircraft was hit by a surface to air missile and crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
