Lieutenant Colonel Conley was a member of the 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron. On January 21, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission 5 miles from Thai Nguyen, Bac Thai Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft was hit by hostile ground fire, burst into flames and crashed. His remains were recovered on June 22, 1989 and identified on July 15, 2002. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
