First Lieutenant Colyer was a crew member of a B-29A Superfortress Bomber with the 370th Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Wing. On December 4, 1951, while departing on a combat mission, one engine quit after takeoff and the aircraft crashed five miles east of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, killing nine crew members.
