Lieutenant Commander Carpenter was a member of Attack Squadron 35, Carrier Air Wing 9, U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS ENTERPRISE (CVAN-65). On June 24, 1968, he was the pilot of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over North Vietnam when his aircraft began to spin out of control and crashed. His remains were recovered on September 13, 1990 and identified on March 27, 1991. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
