Major Carlton was a member of the Marine All Weather Attack Squadron 242, Marine Air Group 11, 1st Marine Air Wing. On April 17, 1967, he was the systems operator flying in a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) on a combat mission on a target twenty miles southeast of Vinh, Nghe An Province, North Vietnam, when his aircraft exploded and crashed. He was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
