Lieutenant Colonel Caras was a member of the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron. On April 28, 1967, he was the pilot of a Thunderchief Fighter (F-105D) on a mission over North Vietnam. As he was returning from his mission he was shot down and crashed into the north bank of the Black River in Nghia Lo Province. His remains were recovered on November 25, 1987 and identified on February 3, 1988. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
