Colonel Campbell was a member of the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon Airfield, Thailand. On January 29, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4D) on a mission over the Mu Gia Pass, Laos, when his aircraft was hit by hostile fire and crashed. His remains were not recovered at the time. In 2017, his remains were identified by the Department of Defense. His name is permanently inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
