Captain Bunker was a member of the 432nd Combat Support Group, 56th Special Operations Wing, Udorn Airfield, Thailand. On December 30, 1970, he was the pilot of a Cessna Bird Dog Observation Aircraft (O-1G) on a mission on the northern edge of the plain of Jars near "Roadrunner" Lake in Laos. He flew low to get a better look at an enemy tank and his aircraft was hit with anti-aircraft fire. He managed to land safely, but was surrounded by the enemy. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
