Lieutenant Commander Brooks was a member of Attack Squadron 196, Carrier Air Wing 2, U.S. Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS RANGER (CVA-61). On January 2, 1970, he was the bombardier/ navigator of a Grumman Attack Aircraft Intruder (A-6A) over Laos when his aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire, crashed and exploded. His remains were recovered on February 3, 1982 and identified on March 4, 1982. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
