Lieutenant Brenning, U.S. Naval Reserve, was a member of Attack Squadron 112, Carrier Air Wing 16 aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS TICONDEROGA (CVA-14). On July 26, 1969, he was the pilot of a Douglas Attack Aircraft Skyhawk (A-4C) and was killed in an aircraft accident upon commencement of a combat flight when his plane impacted the Gulf of Tonkin 60 miles offshore from Ha Tinh Province, North Vietnam. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
