Private First Class Breiner was a member of the Engineer Support Company, 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division. On September 24, 1968, while trying to cross the Bon River in Quang Nam Province, he was caught in the current and drowned. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
