First Lieutenant Bohlig was a member of the Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 115, Marine Air Group 13, 1st Marine Air Wing. On August 19, 1969, he was the pilot of a McDonnell Douglas Phantom II Fighter (F-4B) on a night mission over Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam, when his aircraft crashed. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
